In this enlightening Lecture on Spirituality & Breath, David Verdesi firstly defines the word Spirituality.
The term spirituality has been used and misused so many times nowadays but few actually stop to reflect on what is the definition that they implicitly use for this term. This is in fact an action of paramount importance, for lack of proper definition of terms will very often lead to a misunderstanding of both the purpose of some practise as well as the practise itself.
Subsequently David Verdesi goes on to explain the significant link between Spirit and Breath, and how the breath can be a magnificent tool in the process of liberation.
The single biggest attachment that we all share in this life is the attachment to the body, which is our vehicle of being in this plane of existence. The breath is what keeps our consciousness bound to the body for life to happen. Working on the breath in a manner which indicates awareness of what it is that we do, can lead to the liberation of this link (the breath) between our consciousness and the body. Thus we are able to transcend our common boundaries and can experience what in yogic literature is termed as "little death"; it is a state of suspended animation where breath has virtually seized, all of the bodily functions have been suspended to a minimum, and our consciousness is able to transcend the limits of our physical body.
